How Phobias May be Formed

A phobia can start in many ways, often through trauma or the perception of not being safe. For example, a child may have been pushed on a swing by their sibling or parent to a level they felt too high and unsafe. At the time there may have been tears that were made light of, or the incident may have been brushed over, and although the day carried on as normal, the unsafe association may remain with the child as a feeling.

Later, this association can expand to a feeling of, for example, not wanting to step on a ladder or walk on a bridge over a stream and so, through recognition and repetition in the subconscious mind, neuropathways (shortcuts) are embedded and developed and phobias are formed. Emotions become attached to the phobias and, consequently, even the thought of this situation or thing can be debilitating or completely life limiting.

As it escalates, people with phobias may withdraw or are unable to be in places where they may have to face their fears. This can affect health, with fears of dentists and doctors and can also restrict the ability to live a full life. Holidays may be avoided, if there is a fear of airplanes, boats, the underground; as may anywhere where there may be a crowd, a lift or an enclosed space. Suddenly sitting outside the pub with a beer on a summer's afternoon becomes a horror story, if there is a fear a wasp or a bee may circle your drink.

Phobias also affect the family, with the potential for children to learn the restricting and fearful behaviours; friends and colleagues can also be affected, and it is possible the person that suffers with the phobia now has to deal with a guilt complex too.

Using hypnosis and hypnotherapy you can discover the cause of your fear and create a new perspective. When this happens, you release yourself from the phobia, leaving you to enjoy your life to the full.

Common phobias and fears causing anxiety and sometimes panic attacks include heights, insects, flying, open spaces, enclosed spaces, dentists, doctors, speaking in public, being in social gatherings, parties and crowds.
